A bearded man in orange holds his legs while a figure in red reaches an arm out at the left. Behind them three women mourn, one in a white veil and two with raised arms. A leafy plant grows in shadow at the foot of the slab.

Girolamo Vittrice commissioned the altarpiece for his family chapel in Santa Maria in Vallicella, the Chiesa Nuova in Rome. The Vatican notes that Caravaggio shows the moment Nicodemus and John lay Christ on the Stone of Anointing, the slab that will seal the tomb, rather than the usual burial. Taken to Paris in 1797 under the Treaty of Tolentino, it returned in 1816 and entered Pius VII's Pinacoteca.

The original: oil on canvas, 1603-04; Vatican Museums (Pinacoteca Vaticana), Vatican City.

Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, 1571–1610) was an Italian Baroque painter, apprenticed in Milan to Simone Peterzano before moving to Rome around 1592. He painted directly from live models without preparatory drawings, developing an extreme form of chiaroscuro, later called tenebrism, in which figures emerge from near-total darkness into a single sharp source of light. His frank naturalism and immediacy, applied even to religious subjects, influenced a generation of painters across Europe. His paintings are held by the Galleria Borghese in Rome, the National Gallery, London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
