caravaggio-the-lute-player-fine-art-print
Caravaggio — The Lute Player | Fine Art Print

A young musician with dark curls and a white ribbon in his hair turns to look out as he plucks a lute, his loose white shirt open at the chest. At the left a glass vase holds a mixed bouquet in white, yellow, pink and red, with figs and pears at its foot. On the marble table before him lie open music books with printed notation and a violin with its bow, and the whole scene is lit from the left against a dark brown wall.

The State Hermitage Museum describes this as an early work in which Caravaggio's interest in the solid reality of things already shows: sharp side-lighting gives the fruit, flowers and instruments an almost tangible weight. The music on the table is a then-fashionable love song by Jacques Arcadelt, and the museum reads the cracked lute as a metaphor for love that fails. The painting entered the Hermitage in 1808.

The original: oil on canvas, 1595-1596; The State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg.

Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, 1571–1610) was an Italian Baroque painter, apprenticed in Milan to Simone Peterzano before moving to Rome around 1592. He painted directly from live models without preparatory drawings, developing an extreme form of chiaroscuro, later called tenebrism, in which figures emerge from near-total darkness into a single sharp source of light. His frank naturalism and immediacy, applied even to religious subjects, influenced a generation of painters across Europe. His paintings are held by the Galleria Borghese in Rome, the National Gallery, London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
