Signed and dated 1876.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe scene was the set subject of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts' prize competition in 1876, and this canvas won Larsson the Academy's Royal Medal that year. It shows Christina of Denmark, held at Vadstena Abbey during the war between Sweden and Denmark, being released by the regent Sten Sture the Elder, who escorted her to the Danish border in 1503.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCarl Larsson (1853–1919) was a Swedish painter. Born in Stockholm's Gamla stan, he entered the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts at thirteen and worked as an illustrator before moving to Paris in 1877. At the Scandinavian colony at Grez-sur-Loing he turned to watercolour and met the artist Karin Bergöö, whom he married in 1883. In 1888 the family settled at Lilla Hyttnäs in Sundborn, near Falun, and his watercolours of the house and their eight children, published as Ett hem (A Home) in 1899, made it one of the best-known artist's homes in the world. He also painted murals for the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, including Midvinterblot (1915).\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePrinted as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
