Working first as a wallpaper designer in Paris, he designed the poster for the first Salon de la Rose+Croix in 1892 and went on to illustrate books by Zola, Baudelaire and Maeterlinck; he received a gold medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle and the Légion d'honneur in 1902.
