Its earliest known paintings, from the second quarter of the seventeenth century, already show a distinct manner, with naturalistic figures, pale colours and Mughal and Deccani influence; later work absorbed elements of the bolder Basohli style, and painters used fine parallel lines on garments to suggest volume. Under Raja Umed Singh (r. 1748–64) the painters Laharu and Mahesh illustrated Vaishnava texts and the avatars of Vishnu, and his successor Raj Singh gave land to painters of Nainsukh's family from Guler, whose naturalism gradually replaced the local style.
