Meryon was drawn to them as part of a city in slow transformation. Officials thought the boats unsightly and unhygienic and pushed them steadily toward the outskirts, until few remained by the end of the 1800s.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: etching with engraving, 1850; Cleveland Museum of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCharles Meryon (1821–1868) was a French etcher whose Eaux-fortes sur Paris (1850–54) recorded the old city before Haussmann's rebuilding. Le Stryge (1853), with the horned chimera of Notre-Dame leering over the rooftops, is his most famous plate.
