Both were among the first works bought for the gallery, in 1824, from John Julius Angerstein's collection. He made the ideal landscape his own: harbours at sunrise or sunset, pastoral valleys and coastal views with small figures from myth or scripture, all bathed in a soft, golden light seen against the sun. Collectors across Europe sought his work, and his compositions shaped English landscape gardens and painters from Turner onward.
