Nathaniel Currier (1813–1888) set up in 1835 and made his name with quick prints of fires and steamboat disasters; in 1857 his bookkeeper James Merritt Ives (1824–1895) became his partner and steered it towards everyday and sentimental American subjects. At least 7,500 lithographs followed, from winter scenes to railroads, clipper ships, sport, politics and the Civil War, drawn by artists including Fanny Palmer, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait and George H. Durrie. Sold cheaply by shops, peddlers and mail order, they hung in homes across the country until the firm closed in 1907.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
