Trained at Henry Sass's drawing academy and the Royal Academy Schools before studying under Ford Madox Brown, he co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, rejecting what the group saw as the mechanical conventions of academic painting. His later work turned to close, half-length portraits of women, often modelled by Elizabeth Siddal and Jane Morris, in dense, symbolic compositions drawing on medieval and literary sources.
