King Philip IV sent it to the Viennese court as a gift in 1659, and the Hofburg handed it to the museum in 1922. He was apprenticed to Francisco Pacheco from 1611 and married Pacheco's daughter. In 1623 he moved to Madrid, where Philip IV made him court painter, and he remained in royal service for the rest of his life, with two journeys to Italy in 1629–31 and 1649–51. He painted portraits of the king, the royal family and servants, along with religious, mythological and historical subjects, among them The Surrender of Breda, the Rokeby Venus, a portrait of Pope Innocent X and Las Meninas (1656).
