Behind them two figures stand in shadow, a man in a lit doorway looks back, and a mirror on the rear wall holds two small faces.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eVelazquez painted Las Meninas in 1656 and it is thought to show a room in the Royal Alcazar of Madrid, with the young Infanta Margaret Theresa among her maids of honour, dwarfs and dog, the painter at his easel and a mirror usually read as reflecting the king and queen. A fire at the Alcazar in 1734 damaged it, and it entered the Prado when the museum was founded in 1819. Luca Giordano's admiration led him to paint a homage, and Picasso made 58 variations on it in 1957.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDiego Velázquez (1599–1660) was a Spanish Baroque painter, born in Seville. He was apprenticed to Francisco Pacheco from 1611 and married Pacheco's daughter. In 1623 he moved to Madrid, where Philip IV made him court painter, and he remained in royal service for the rest of his life, with two journeys to Italy in 1629–31 and 1649–51. He painted portraits of the king, the royal family and servants, along with religious, mythological and historical subjects, among them The Surrender of Breda, the Rokeby Venus, a portrait of Pope Innocent X and Las Meninas (1656).
