He wears a black doublet and breeches, a folded paper tucked in his belt. One hand is raised with a small dark object between the fingers, and the other holds a long thin rod pointing to the floor. At the left, a folding wooden stool with a tan leather seat casts its shadow on the pale floor.

Calabazas was a jester at the court of Philip IV of Spain, with physical and mental disabilities, which the Cleveland Museum of Art says Velázquez emphasizes rather than hides. He places a type of person then seen as marginal in the format of the formal full-length court portrait. The museum notes that Calabazas holds a pinwheel and a miniature portrait of a woman. The canvas was in the royal collection at the Buen Retiro, Madrid, until at least 1808.

The original: oil on canvas, c. 1631-32; Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland.

Diego Velázquez (1599–1660) was a Spanish Baroque painter, born in Seville. He was apprenticed to Francisco Pacheco from 1611 and married Pacheco's daughter. In 1623 he moved to Madrid, where Philip IV made him court painter, and he remained in royal service for the rest of his life, with two journeys to Italy in 1629–31 and 1649–51. He painted portraits of the king, the royal family and servants, along with religious, mythological and historical subjects, among them The Surrender of Breda, the Rokeby Venus, a portrait of Pope Innocent X and Las Meninas (1656). His work is held by the Museo del Prado, the National Gallery, London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
