A bearded man at the back sings with his mouth wide open and his eyes raised, a man at right in a yellow tunic and white collar holds a violin and bow, and a boy in front, in a black vest with puffed yellow sleeves, grins at the viewer and holds out a full glass. A small monkey sits behind him. On the table lie a bread roll on a napkin and a round box with a knife in it.

Velázquez painted it in Seville before becoming court painter in Madrid in 1623, and five versions of the composition survive. The Berlin museum calls this one the best in quality, though the uneven light and space have led some to doubt it is entirely his own work; others see those same features as marks of one of his earliest surviving paintings, made while he trained in Pacheco's workshop.

The original: painted on canvas, 1616-18; Gemäldegalerie, Berlin.

Diego Velázquez (1599–1660) was a Spanish Baroque painter, born in Seville. He was apprenticed to Francisco Pacheco from 1611 and married Pacheco's daughter. In 1623 he moved to Madrid, where Philip IV made him court painter, and he remained in royal service for the rest of his life, with two journeys to Italy in 1629–31 and 1649–51. He painted portraits of the king, the royal family and servants, along with religious, mythological and historical subjects, among them The Surrender of Breda, the Rokeby Venus, a portrait of Pope Innocent X and Las Meninas (1656). His work is held by the Museo del Prado, the National Gallery, London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
