He passed the highest civil-service examination in his mid-thirties and held a series of official posts. Taking up an idea of his friend Mo Shilong, he divided Chinese painting into a Northern school of professionals and a Southern school of scholar-amateurs, whom he ranked higher, ideas that shaped Chinese thinking about painting long after him. His own landscapes, such as Invitation to Reclusion at Jingxi (1611), rework the Yuan-dynasty scholar-painters in deliberately stark, awkward forms.
