Mid-stage others rehearse with arms raised beside a man in a top hat seated on a chair, and a dancer in the foreground lifts both hands to the back of her neck.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDegas painted this rehearsal in grisaille, a range of greys and browns, and showed it in 1874 at the first Impressionist exhibition in Paris, where its palette drew attention. It sets dancers resting as they wait their turn against those rehearsing, a backstage subject painting had rarely shown before. It passed from the collection of Isaac de Camondo to the Louvre by bequest in 1911 and has been at the Musée d'Orsay since 1986.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, 1874, Musée d'Orsay, Paris.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEdgar Degas (1834–1917) was a French painter, printmaker and sculptor. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Louis Lamothe, an admirer of Ingres, then spent three years in Italy copying Renaissance paintings before returning to Paris. Though he exhibited with the Impressionists and painted modern urban subjects, he preferred to be called a realist and refused to paint outdoors; more than half his output depicts dancers, and he also painted racehorses, laundresses, milliners and psychologically direct portraits.
