She later recalled that Degas arrived without proper canvas and was given a remnant of mattress ticking instead; the story was doubted until 1996, when blue-and-white striping was found at the taped edges of the canvas. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Louis Lamothe, an admirer of Ingres, then spent three years in Italy copying Renaissance paintings before returning to Paris. Though he exhibited with the Impressionists and painted modern urban subjects, he preferred to be called a realist and refused to paint outdoors; more than half his output depicts dancers, and he also painted racehorses, laundresses, milliners and psychologically direct portraits.
