It remained with him until 1913, when he left it with his dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel. When it appeared in the sale of his estate in 1918 it was bought at once by the Musée du Luxembourg, and it now hangs in the Musée d'Orsay.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, 1858–1869, Musée d'Orsay, Paris.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEdgar Degas (1834–1917) was a French painter, printmaker and sculptor. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Louis Lamothe, an admirer of Ingres, then spent three years in Italy copying Renaissance paintings before returning to Paris. Though he exhibited with the Impressionists and painted modern urban subjects, he preferred to be called a realist and refused to paint outdoors; more than half his output depicts dancers, and he also painted racehorses, laundresses, milliners and psychologically direct portraits.
