edouard-manet-asparagus-fine-art-print
Édouard Manet — Asparagus | Fine Art Print

A single white asparagus spear, its tip tinged with purple and green, lies diagonally along the edge of a pale grey marble tabletop, its shadow a dark line beneath it. Loose grey strokes suggest the veining of the marble, and a dark wedge of shadow fills the lower right corner. The artist's initial is brushed at the upper right.

The Musée d'Orsay tells the story behind the painting: Manet sold the collector Charles Ephrussi a still life of a bunch of asparagus for 800 francs, and Ephrussi sent him 1,000. Manet painted this single spear and sent it with a note saying one had been missing from the bunch. The museum notes the play between the mauves and greys of the asparagus and the marble.

The original: oil on canvas, 1880; Musée d'Orsay, Paris.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was the painter around whom modern French art turned. Trained under Couture and steeped in Velázquez and Goya, he scandalised the Salon with Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia (1863), then painted the bars, railways, gardens and flower pieces of contemporary Paris with a flat, direct touch that the Impressionists adopted, though he never exhibited with them. His paintings are held by the Musée d'Orsay, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
