Behind the bench a bearded man in black leans forward, a cigar between his fingers, his hand near hers on the backrest; both wear gold rings. Palms, broad leaves and pink flowers fill the background, and a blue-and-white planter stands at the left.

Manet painted the couple in a studio fitted out as a glasshouse that he was using at the time; the Alte Nationalgalerie identifies the sitters as his friends the Guillemets, who ran a fashion shop on the Rue Saint-Honoré. Hugo von Tschudi bought the picture in Paris in 1896, months after becoming director, and the museum calls the purchase the start of the gallery's revival. In 1904 it was attacked in the Prussian parliament as improper.

The original: oil on canvas, 1878–79; Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was the painter around whom modern French art turned. Trained under Couture and steeped in Velázquez and Goya, he scandalised the Salon with Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia (1863), then painted the bars, railways, gardens and flower pieces of contemporary Paris with a flat, direct touch that the Impressionists adopted, though he never exhibited with them. His paintings are held by the Musée d'Orsay, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
