edouard-manet-luncheon-on-the-grass-fine-art-print
Édouard Manet — Luncheon on the Grass | Fine Art Print

In a woodland clearing a woman with no clothes sits on a blue dress spread on the grass, chin on her hand, looking straight out. Beside her two men in dark jackets recline, one in a tasselled black cap gesturing as he talks. In front lie a straw hat with a blue ribbon, an overturned basket spilling peaches and cherries, a round loaf and a flask. Behind them a woman in a white shift bends in the stream, and a small bird flies high in the trees.

Rejected by the jury of the 1863 Salon, the canvas was shown by Manet under the title Le Bain at the Salon des Refusés, where, the Musée d'Orsay records, it drew mockery and scandal. The museum traces its sources to Titian's Pastoral Concert and an engraving after Raphael, but notes that an unclothed woman among dressed men had no mythological pretext, and its abrupt light and shade broke convention as much as its subject. It entered the national collections in 1906.

The original: oil on canvas, 1863; Musée d'Orsay, Paris.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was the painter around whom modern French art turned. Trained under Couture and steeped in Velázquez and Goya, he scandalised the Salon with Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia (1863), then painted the bars, railways, gardens and flower pieces of contemporary Paris with a flat, direct touch that the Impressionists adopted, though he never exhibited with them. His paintings are held by the Musée d'Orsay, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
