edouard-manet-olympia-fine-art-print
Édouard Manet — Olympia | Fine Art Print

A young woman reclines on white pillows and sheets, looking straight out, a pink flower in her hair, a black ribbon at her throat and a gold bracelet on her arm. One slipper hangs from her foot; the other lies on a cream shawl embroidered with flowers. Behind her a Black maid in a pale pink dress holds out a large bouquet wrapped in white paper, and at the foot of the bed a black cat arches its tail. The background is dark green and brown.

The Musée d'Orsay reads the picture as Manet's reworking of the reclining Venus, quoting Titian's Venus of Urbino and Goya's Maja, but turning the goddess into a contemporary courtesan who returns the viewer's calculating look. Shown at the Salon of 1865, it caused a scandal; critics mocked it while a small circle led by Émile Zola defended its modernity. In 1890 it was offered to the French State by a public subscription organised by Claude Monet.

The original: oil on canvas, 1863; Musée d'Orsay, Paris.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was the painter around whom modern French art turned. Trained under Couture and steeped in Velázquez and Goya, he scandalised the Salon with Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia (1863), then painted the bars, railways, gardens and flower pieces of contemporary Paris with a flat, direct touch that the Impressionists adopted, though he never exhibited with them. His paintings are held by the Musée d'Orsay, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
