edouard-manet-on-the-beach-fine-art-print
Édouard Manet — On the Beach | Fine Art Print

Two figures sit on pale sand with their backs half turned. In the foreground a woman in a voluminous grey dress and a white veil tied with black ribbon bends over a book. Beside her a bearded man in a dark coat and dark blue cap reclines, gazing out to sea, where emerald and ultramarine waves roll in and sailing boats dot the horizon under a pale sky. A small red-patterned bundle lies on the sand, and the signature is at the lower right.

The Musée d'Orsay records that Manet painted this canvas in the summer of 1873 during three weeks with his family at Berck-sur-Mer, with his wife Suzanne and his brother Eugène posing on the beach; grains of sand are mixed into the paint. The museum points to the flattened sea and high horizon as a sign of Japanese influence. The painting once belonged to the couturier Jacques Doucet.

The original: oil on canvas, 1873; Musée d'Orsay, Paris.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was the painter around whom modern French art turned. Trained under Couture and steeped in Velázquez and Goya, he scandalised the Salon with Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia (1863), then painted the bars, railways, gardens and flower pieces of contemporary Paris with a flat, direct touch that the Impressionists adopted, though he never exhibited with them. His paintings are held by the Musée d'Orsay, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
