edouard-manet-portrait-of-stephane-mallarme-fine-art-print
Édouard Manet — Portrait of Stéphane Mallarmé | Fine Art Print

A man with tousled dark hair and a moustache leans back against pale, loosely patterned cushions, his gaze turned aside. He wears a dark blue-black jacket over grey trousers; one hand is tucked into his coat pocket, the other rests on a stack of papers with a cigar between the fingers, a wisp of smoke rising. The background is an ochre wall brushed with sketchy sprays of leaves and a small bird. The signature and date are at the lower left.

Manet painted this small canvas in 1876, the year Mallarmé published L'Après-midi d'un faune with Manet's illustrations; the year before they had collaborated on a French edition of Poe's The Raven. The Musée d'Orsay says the portrait thanked the poet for an article placing Manet at the head of the Impressionist movement. It stayed in Mallarmé's family until the Louvre bought it in 1928.

The original: oil on canvas, 1876; Musée d'Orsay, Paris.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was the painter around whom modern French art turned. Trained under Couture and steeped in Velázquez and Goya, he scandalised the Salon with Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia (1863), then painted the bars, railways, gardens and flower pieces of contemporary Paris with a flat, direct touch that the Impressionists adopted, though he never exhibited with them. His paintings are held by the Musée d'Orsay, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
