She lifts a handful of cherries to her mouth and clutches a paper cone of cherries and a guitar under her other arm, her skirt gathered up to show a white petticoat. Through the doorway at the left, customers sit at tables and a waiter in a white apron stands. The signature is at the lower left.

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston records Antonin Proust's account that Manet saw a street singer leaving a café and asked her to pose; when she refused, he restaged the scene in his studio with his favourite model, Victorine Meurent. Émile Zola praised the painting's frankness, while other critics mocked its handling. The painting was owned by Jean-Baptiste Faure before entering the museum in 1966.

The original: oil on canvas, about 1862; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was the painter around whom modern French art turned. Trained under Couture and steeped in Velázquez and Goya, he scandalised the Salon with Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia (1863), then painted the bars, railways, gardens and flower pieces of contemporary Paris with a flat, direct touch that the Impressionists adopted, though he never exhibited with them. His paintings are held by the Musée d'Orsay, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
