edouard-manet-the-balcony-fine-art-print
Édouard Manet — The Balcony | Fine Art Print

Behind a bright green iron railing, a dark-haired woman in white sits holding a closed fan, a green ribbon and gold pendant at her throat. Beside her a woman in white with flowers in her hair draws on yellow gloves, a green parasol under her arm, and between them stands a man in a dark suit and blue tie holding a cigarette. Green shutters frame the opening, a fourth figure is half lost in the dark room behind, and a small dog stands by a ball near a potted hydrangea.

The Musée d'Orsay notes that the picture takes up the fashionable subject of bourgeois life yet meets none of its expectations: everyone on the balcony was close to Manet, the painter Berthe Morisot, seated in front, makes her first appearance in his work here, and the figures stand fixed, each lost in thought, with no story to tell. At the Salon of 1869 it met incomprehension. Gustave Caillebotte bought it at Manet's studio sale in 1884 and left it to the French state.

The original: oil on canvas, 1868–69; Musée d'Orsay, Paris.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was the painter around whom modern French art turned. Trained under Couture and steeped in Velázquez and Goya, he scandalised the Salon with Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia (1863), then painted the bars, railways, gardens and flower pieces of contemporary Paris with a flat, direct touch that the Impressionists adopted, though he never exhibited with them. His paintings are held by the Musée d'Orsay, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
