An officer behind them raises a sabre, and at the right a bearded soldier in a red-topped cap stands apart, looking down at his rifle. They stand on pale sand before a high grey wall, a dark wooded hillside rising beyond it, and the signature and date are brushed at the lower left.

The original: oil on canvas, 1867; Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was the painter around whom modern French art turned. Trained under Couture and steeped in Velázquez and Goya, he scandalised the Salon with Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia (1863), then painted the bars, railways, gardens and flower pieces of contemporary Paris with a flat, direct touch that the Impressionists adopted, though he never exhibited with them. His paintings are held by the Musée d'Orsay, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
