The first version, of 1886 to 1889, was destroyed by fire in Kristiania in 1890, and the second is lost. A photograph taken in his Berlin studio in 1894 shows the picture still in progress, without the bottles and glasses. Trained at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania under Christian Krohg, he lived in Berlin through the 1890s, where he developed the Frieze of Life, a cycle on love, anxiety and death that included The Scream and five versions of Madonna. From 1894 he also produced an extensive body of intaglio and woodcut prints, and designed murals for the University of Oslo's ceremonial hall (1914–1916).
