It was his first colour lithograph, and the last of three prints he based on his painted versions of The Sick Child, which show his sister Sophie shortly before her death from tuberculosis. Trained at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania under Christian Krohg, he lived in Berlin through the 1890s, where he developed the Frieze of Life, a cycle on love, anxiety and death that included The Scream and five versions of Madonna. From 1894 he also produced an extensive body of intaglio and woodcut prints, and designed murals for the University of Oslo's ceremonial hall (1914–1916).
