Black ink with touches of white on toned buff paper, signed and dated 1914 at lower centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEdward Borein (1872–1945) was an American etcher, watercolourist and illustrator of cowboy and vaquero life. Born in San Leandro, California, he worked as a cowboy from his teens, riding ranges in California and working as a vaquero in Mexico; in 1903 he worked on the Babicora hacienda for Phoebe Hearst. After a brief spell at the San Francisco Art Association's school he drew for the San Francisco Call, and in 1907 moved to New York, where his studio became a meeting place for Will Rogers, Charles M. Russell and Buffalo Bill Cody. In 1921 he married and settled in Santa Barbara, where he taught etching.
