edward-s-curtis-chief-joseph-nez-perce-vintage-photograph-print
Edward S. Curtis — Chief Joseph, Nez Percé | Vintage Photograph Print

Chief Joseph of the Nez Percé looks straight at the camera, his hair swept up and back from his brow. Large round shell discs hang from his ears, and many strands of pale beads fall across his chest over a light shirt and a dark vest. Bands of fur run down both shoulders, tied with tufts of pale fur, and a round button shows at his waist. Strong side light models the lines of his face against a dark ground. It was published in The North American Indian.

The original: photogravure, 1903, The Cleveland Museum of Art.

Edward S. Curtis (1868–1952) was an American photographer, born near Whitewater, Wisconsin, who ran a portrait studio in Seattle. Work as photographer to the Harriman Alaska Expedition of 1899 led him to plan a record of the Native peoples of western North America. Funded by J. Pierpont Morgan, The North American Indian (1907–30) grew to 20 volumes of text with 20 portfolios of photogravures. He paid sitters to pose, often reconstructing ways of life that had passed, and retouched modern objects out of some pictures; his work fixed the image of Native Americans as a vanishing race, and has been criticised for it. His prints are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
