edward-s-curtis-iahla-willow-taos-vintage-photograph-print
Edward S. Curtis — Iahla (Willow), Taos | Vintage Photograph Print

Iahla, or Willow, a man of Taos, is framed by a pale cloth drawn over his head and down across both shoulders. His face turns three-quarters to the right and his eyes look past the camera; light falls strongly on his cheekbone and brow, and dark hair shows at his temples beneath the cloth. At his throat a small pale angular shape sits against a dark patterned fabric. The deep brown background sets off the soft folds of the wrap. It was published in The North American Indian.

The original: photogravure, 1905, The Cleveland Museum of Art.

Edward S. Curtis (1868–1952) was an American photographer, born near Whitewater, Wisconsin, who ran a portrait studio in Seattle. Work as photographer to the Harriman Alaska Expedition of 1899 led him to plan a record of the Native peoples of western North America. Funded by J. Pierpont Morgan, The North American Indian (1907–30) grew to 20 volumes of text with 20 portfolios of photogravures. He paid sitters to pose, often reconstructing ways of life that had passed, and retouched modern objects out of some pictures; his work fixed the image of Native Americans as a vanishing race, and has been criticised for it. His prints are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
