Curtis (1868–1952) was an American photographer, born near Whitewater, Wisconsin, who ran a portrait studio in Seattle. Work as photographer to the Harriman Alaska Expedition of 1899 led him to plan a record of the Native peoples of western North America. Funded by J. Pierpont Morgan, The North American Indian (1907–30) grew to 20 volumes of text with 20 portfolios of photogravures. He paid sitters to pose, often reconstructing ways of life that had passed, and retouched modern objects out of some pictures; his work fixed the image of Native Americans as a vanishing race, and has been criticised for it. His prints are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cleveland Museum of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePrinted as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
