A protégé of Gustav Klimt, he exhibited from 1909 and developed an angular, nervous line and a raw treatment of the body — self-portraits, figures, and later townscapes and landscapes of equal intensity. He died in the influenza epidemic of 1918 at twenty-eight, days after his wife.
