el-greco-boy-blowing-an-ember-fine-art-print
El Greco — Boy Blowing an Ember | Fine Art Print

A boy with short dark hair bends over a glowing ember held in the open palm of one shadowed hand, cheeks puffed as he blows, eyes cast down. His other hand raises a slim white candle to touch the coals. He wears a cream shirt with a white open collar and a row of buttons, its sleeves ending in a white cuff, and the warm light of the ember falls on his face, collar and fingers while the background stays near black.

The Farnese collection held this canvas; Charles of Bourbon inherited it in 1734 and took it to Naples, and it hangs today in the Museo di Capodimonte. It is among El Greco's earliest figure paintings, made in Italy, and may be his attempt to recreate a lost picture by the ancient Greek painter Antiphilus, which Pliny the Elder describes. He reused the boy's figure in The Fable, about 1580.

El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos, 1541–1614) was born in Crete, where he trained as an icon painter, and worked in Venice and Rome before settling in Toledo in 1577. There he painted altarpieces and portraits for the city's churches, monasteries and learned men, among them The Burial of the Count of Orgaz in Santo Tomé. His elongated figures, flickering light and cold, intense colour set him apart from every painter of his time; he was largely forgotten after his death and rediscovered around 1900, when artists from Cézanne to Picasso took him up. His work is held by the Prado, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
