In the lower-right corner he portrayed four artists, naming Titian, Michelangelo, Giulio Clovio and Raphael; Clovio had secured him lodgings at the Palazzo Farnese. The museum reads the full signature in Greek letters on the step below Christ.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, about 1570–75; Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEl Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos, 1541–1614) was born in Crete, where he trained as an icon painter, and worked in Venice and Rome before settling in Toledo in 1577. There he painted altarpieces and portraits for the city's churches, monasteries and learned men, among them The Burial of the Count of Orgaz in Santo Tomé. His elongated figures, flickering light and cold, intense colour set him apart from every painter of his time; he was largely forgotten after his death and rediscovered around 1900, when artists from Cézanne to Picasso took him up.
