el-greco-christ-on-the-cross-fine-art-print
El Greco — Christ on the Cross | Fine Art Print

Christ hangs on a dark brown cross, arms stretched along the crossbar, head tilted up under a crown of thorns, a white cloth at his hips. A tablet above his head carries an inscription in three scripts. Blue-white clouds break through a black sky at the top and right. Below, a green hillside runs to a distant town, with two skulls and scattered bones in the foreground and a small rider on a white horse carrying a pink banner.

El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos, 1541–1614) was born in Crete, where he trained as an icon painter, and worked in Venice and Rome before settling in Toledo in 1577. There he painted altarpieces and portraits for the city's churches, monasteries and learned men, among them The Burial of the Count of Orgaz in Santo Tomé. His elongated figures, flickering light and cold, intense colour set him apart from every painter of his time; he was largely forgotten after his death and rediscovered around 1900, when artists from Cézanne to Picasso took him up. His work is held by the Prado, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
