He wears a pleated white ruff and a black garment with a broad tan fur collar, painted in thick, broken strokes against a mottled brown ground. The picture is cut off at the shoulders, so the face fills the upper half.

The original: oil on canvas, about 1595–1600; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos, 1541–1614) was born in Crete, where he trained as an icon painter, and worked in Venice and Rome before settling in Toledo in 1577. There he painted altarpieces and portraits for the city's churches, monasteries and learned men, among them The Burial of the Count of Orgaz in Santo Tomé. His elongated figures, flickering light and cold, intense colour set him apart from every painter of his time; he was largely forgotten after his death and rediscovered around 1900, when artists from Cézanne to Picasso took him up. His work is held by the Prado, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
