There he painted altarpieces and portraits for the city's churches, monasteries and learned men, among them The Burial of the Count of Orgaz in Santo Tomé. His elongated figures, flickering light and cold, intense colour set him apart from every painter of his time; he was largely forgotten after his death and rediscovered around 1900, when artists from Cézanne to Picasso took him up.
