Trained as an architect in Darmstadt, he illustrated Yiddish children's books before joining Kazimir Malevich at the Vitebsk art school in 1919, where he began the abstract compositions he called Prouns. In Berlin in the early 1920s he carried the new Russian art to Western Europe, designing the picture book Of Two Squares, Mayakovsky's For the Voice and the Proun Room, and later the photomontage exhibitions of the Soviet Union.
