It is generally read as an effort to soften the queen's public image by showing her as a mother among her children; the empty cradle is said to stand for her youngest daughter, who died before the picture was finished. Largely self-taught, she became Marie Antoinette's official portraitist in 1778 and was admitted to the Royal Academy in 1783, one of only four women members. She fled France at the Revolution and worked for twelve years in Italy, Vienna and Saint Petersburg, painting the courts of Europe, before returning to Paris. Her portraits are known for their warmth, natural poses and fresh colour; her self-portraits with her daughter Julie are among the best loved.
