He studied medicine in Berlin and Würzburg under Johannes Peter Müller, then turned from medical practice to zoology, becoming a professor at the University of Jena in 1862 and remaining there for 47 years. He is best known for Kunstformen der Natur (1899–1904), a hundred-plate compendium of radiolarians, jellyfish and other organisms rendered with a decorative symmetry that fed directly into Art Nouveau design, alongside his earlier scientific monographs on marine invertebrates.
