Ribbon-like worms twist down both sides, one ringed like a stack of discs; a curled pair flanks a small body at the top centre. A broad oval form with a row of round suckers fills the middle, a frilled rosette and a hook-ringed sphere sit either side, and below, two bodies fused in an X lie between two shield-shaped forms, each marked with a wheel-like sucker.

The original: colour lithograph, plate 75 of Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), Leipzig, 1899–1904.

Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919) was a German zoologist and illustrator. He studied medicine in Berlin and Würzburg under Johannes Peter Müller, then turned from medical practice to zoology, becoming a professor at the University of Jena in 1862 and remaining there for 47 years. He is best known for Kunstformen der Natur (1899–1904), a hundred-plate compendium of radiolarians, jellyfish and other organisms rendered with a decorative symmetry that fed directly into Art Nouveau design, alongside his earlier scientific monographs on marine invertebrates. His work is preserved in Jena, at the Ernst-Haeckel-Haus and the Phyletic Museum.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
