A star-pointed disc, a round shell with two eye-like rings and a large scalloped wheel lead the upper half; boat and peanut shapes, oval discs and segmented chains line the sides; branching fans of wedge-shaped cells rise at the bottom between a triangular honeycomb shell and a four-lobed cushion. Plate 84 of Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), 1899–1904.

The original: lithograph, plate 84 of Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), Leipzig, 1899–1904.

Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919) was a German zoologist and illustrator. He studied medicine in Berlin and Würzburg under Johannes Peter Müller, then turned from medical practice to zoology, becoming a professor at the University of Jena in 1862 and remaining there for 47 years. He is best known for Kunstformen der Natur (1899–1904), a hundred-plate compendium of radiolarians, jellyfish and other organisms rendered with a decorative symmetry that fed directly into Art Nouveau design, alongside his earlier scientific monographs on marine invertebrates. His work is preserved in Jena, at the Ernst-Haeckel-Haus and the Phyletic Museum.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
