ethel-reed-the-best-guide-to-boston-vintage-poster-print
Ethel Reed — The Best Guide to Boston | Vintage Poster Print

A tall, narrow sheet printed in dark teal on tan paper. A woman in a small round-crowned hat looks down at the little guidebook she holds open, her striped dress topped by huge puffed sleeves, a travelling bag hanging from her other hand. Behind her, heavy masses of dark foliage rise to the top of the frame, and a pale domed building shows at upper left. Lettering above and below advertises the guide, Boston Illustrated. Signed Ethel Reed at lower right of the picture.

Ethel Reed (1874–1912) was an American illustrator and poster artist from Massachusetts, one of the first women to make her name in the American poster craze of the 1890s. Largely self-taught, she designed posters and book covers for Boston publishers between 1894 and 1897 — young women among flowers, in flat colour and elegant line, often with Japanese-inspired composition. She moved to Europe in 1897 and worked briefly in London before giving up art. Her posters are held by the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
