Her hair is long and black. White leaves form a canopy across the top, and white puffball flowers bloom in the grass at the foot. A line of lettering across the top names a collection of poems, and a panel at the bottom gives the publisher and price. Signed E. Reed.

The original: relief print, 1895; The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Ethel Reed (1874–1912) was an American illustrator and poster artist from Massachusetts, one of the first women to make her name in the American poster craze of the 1890s. Largely self-taught, she designed posters and book covers for Boston publishers between 1894 and 1897 — young women among flowers, in flat colour and elegant line, often with Japanese-inspired composition. She moved to Europe in 1897 and worked briefly in London before giving up art. Her posters are held by the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
