ethel-reed-time-and-the-hour-vintage-poster-print
Ethel Reed — Time and the Hour | Vintage Poster Print

A red-haired young woman smiles over her shoulder, one hand at her collar, in a red cape over a black bodice. Behind her, bearded faces drawn in red stipple crowd the black ground. The poster is printed in red and black on grey-brown card, the paper itself serving for the light tones. Huge cream block letters spell the title, one word across the top, two running down the left edge and one across the foot. Signed Ethel Reed at the bottom edge.

Ethel Reed (1874–1912) was an American illustrator and poster artist from Massachusetts, one of the first women to make her name in the American poster craze of the 1890s. Largely self-taught, she designed posters and book covers for Boston publishers between 1894 and 1897 — young women among flowers, in flat colour and elegant line, often with Japanese-inspired composition. She moved to Europe in 1897 and worked briefly in London before giving up art. Her posters are held by the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
