ethel-reed-uncle-sams-church-vintage-poster-print
Ethel Reed — Uncle Sam's Church | Vintage Poster Print

Within a shield filled with stars and red-and-white stripes, a white-haired, bearded Uncle Sam in a blue coat and red-and-white striped bow tie leans on a lectern, one hand resting on a scroll while the other grips the edge of a drape. Beside him a young woman in a laurel wreath and blue Grecian gown looks up, holding a striped cloth. A pale dome rises behind them. Lettering above names the book and its author; the publisher's name fills the foot. Signed Reed at the shield's lower edge.

Ethel Reed (1874–1912) was an American illustrator and poster artist from Massachusetts, one of the first women to make her name in the American poster craze of the 1890s. Largely self-taught, she designed posters and book covers for Boston publishers between 1894 and 1897 — young women among flowers, in flat colour and elegant line, often with Japanese-inspired composition. She moved to Europe in 1897 and worked briefly in London before giving up art. Her posters are held by the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
