A dapple-grey horse stands in the water while a man in a red jacket bends at its side and another stoops into the current. To the right a man in a white burnous stands among chestnut horses and a black horse, a figure in a red turban behind them. Further upstream, small figures tend more horses in the shallows under a pale blue sky banked with cloud; the signature is painted at lower right.

The original: Oil on panel, 1872; Clark Art Institute, Williamstown.

Eugène Fromentin (1820–1876) was a French painter and writer from La Rochelle. Three journeys to Algeria between 1846 and 1853 gave him his subject for life: horsemen, falconers and encampments on the high plateaux, painted in silvery light with a quick, feathery touch. He wrote two admired travel books on the Sahara and the Sahel, and his study of Dutch and Flemish painting, The Masters of Past Time (1876), is still read. His work is held by the Musée d'Orsay, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Clark Art Institute.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
