In their shade people sit around belongings and pots, and a tripod of poles with a dark bundle hanging from it stands between the tents. A man hurries across the sand with a load on his back, camels rest by the tents, and a donkey lies near another that stands. A dog and grazing camels stand at the left; bleached bones lie in the foreground under a pale blue sky.

Eugène Fromentin (1820–1876) was a French painter and writer from La Rochelle. Three journeys to Algeria between 1846 and 1853 gave him his subject for life: horsemen, falconers and encampments on the high plateaux, painted in silvery light with a quick, feathery touch. He wrote two admired travel books on the Sahara and the Sahel, and his study of Dutch and Flemish painting, The Masters of Past Time (1876), is still read. His work is held by the Musée d'Orsay, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Clark Art Institute.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
