Men in white and red caps sit in groups on the sand, two others carry a pole between their shoulders, and camels kneel beside saddled donkeys. At the left, water buffalo lie half-submerged in the still river, horns showing. Distant sails and low cliffs sit on the horizon under a wide, pale sky; the signature is painted at lower right.

The original: Oil on canvas, 1871; Art Institute of Chicago.

Eugène Fromentin (1820–1876) was a French painter and writer from La Rochelle. Three journeys to Algeria between 1846 and 1853 gave him his subject for life: horsemen, falconers and encampments on the high plateaux, painted in silvery light with a quick, feathery touch. He wrote two admired travel books on the Sahara and the Sahel, and his study of Dutch and Flemish painting, The Masters of Past Time (1876), is still read. His work is held by the Musée d'Orsay, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Clark Art Institute.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
